How to Pick Quality Collectible Knife and Sword

It may not be thoroughly inexplicable or surprising that there are now apparently more people who are attracted to the idea of a collectible knife and sword. There is nothing to wonder about this. If people can collect potato mashers than why not opt for a collectible knife and sword? It is easy to imagine that the collectible knife and sword may have been born because of the growing number of action, historical and fantasy movies that feature all sorts of attractive bladed instruments. Even before this recent trend in the movie industry however, people have already been into collecting bladed instruments. Well, it would be logical to presume that a medieval armory should have such a collection for obvious reasons. People of the Renaissance age also may have collected knives and swords both for protection and distinction.

The modern man however, who is into the collectible knife and sword may be one of four types. Some folks may actually want to have a collectible knife and sword with actual historical significance. The second kind would probably prefer to a collectible knife and sword that is a replica of the actual historical one for financial reasons. A third kind of collector may prefer to collect fantasy-type sorts over historical ones and may actual consider spending insanely large amounts of dough to purchase original Hollywood knives and swords used by so and so in this or that movie. The fourth and last type would be the one who is still into fantasy knives and swords but would prefer buying replicas.

The only thing collectors of all types should do to pick a good, quality collectible knife and sword would be to invest time and money in getting to know blade history and details whether you are a historical or fantasy collector. If you are a historical collector, you probably wouldn’t have much of a problem if you didn’t need to go way back in time for your collectible knife and sword. It would be fairly easy for example to detect a collectible utility or bowie knife or even a good replica of a confederate saber. You might need however to dig a little bit deeper into culture and history to make sure that the piece you are buying is not a cross breed fake. You should know for example how real oriental swords like the dao and the katana should really look like, including the specifications of blade length relative to the hilt. Oriental swords have different specifications as western ones and are also different from each other depending on the country of origin. Other sword types of historical origin that you might need to study are spathas, longswords, broadwords, rapiers, cutlasses and scimitars.

Remember that each sword type is unique and has qualities that set it apart from all the others. So get to know your history or fantasy like the back of your hand and you’ll know a good knife or sword even from that store window across the street.
